Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney has thrown his support behind President Donald Trump’s renewed effort to bring an end to the war in Ukraine, praising Washington’s willingness to provide long-term security guarantees for Kyiv once peace is reached.
In a statement issued Saturday, Carney said U.S. leadership under Trump is “opening the door to end Russia’s unlawful war in Ukraine.” He stressed that strong and credible security assurances will be key to achieving a fair and lasting peace.
Carney also welcomed the role of the “Coalition of the Willing,” a group of nations — including Canada — formed to back Ukraine’s defense and future security. Leaders of the coalition, led by French President Emmanuel Macron and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, will hold a virtual summit on Sunday to discuss next steps.
“Canada continues to work closely with President Zelenskyy and our coalition partners to strengthen support for Ukraine and ensure long-term peace and stability,” Carney added.
His comments come just after Trump’s high-stakes meeting with Vladimir Putin ended without a breakthrough. Following the talks, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced he will travel to Washington on Monday to meet Trump and outline a path forward.
However, European allies remain cautious. Some fear Trump may not extend the same warm welcome to Zelenskyy as he did with Putin. To ensure Kyiv’s voice is heard, at least one senior Western figure — likely Finnish President Alexander Stubb or NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte — is expected to accompany Zelenskyy as a supporter during the discussions.
